371. MY LAND FOR YOUR SALLY

MY LAND FOR YOUR SALLY
The wind like a wild man whistled -
high and shrill - shaking trees twisted
and routing them round from their roots.
There was, truly, nothing anyone could do
but count the seconds, minutes, hours
until all of this fury passed. What would be
left - ruination and rubble - would perhaps
be one day rebuilt. We were entering a
land of no return.
-
I offered to harbor your family, take
your Sally even for my own. Anything
to help. Whatever I could do - expand my
largess, embrace your family members,
be wedded - if that's what it took - to your
very own daughter.
-
If only anything had survived.
When the sky cleared it was myself
alone, still single and rare, who was left.
