On Madelaine Lane the ply the barriers freely -
a line of Asian people waiting for tea and coffee.
Rows and rows of little books for sale. On the
western back lots of where the film industry
used to be - a nascent fray, a secret vice -
they're still building the fake houses of
movie-set fantasy. Chandeliers and third floor
landings, great stairways where dancers
can wait to enter. On the blistered horizon,
a great, white smoke lays low the trebled land.
Rain falls in buckets, as is said, with but
nowhere to go but down, down, down.
In the foyer, in the step-up room, along
the very ground's hallway, everything
leads to descent. They are yet building
the enormous, vast rooms.
